News Media LabAn interdisciplinary and collaborative innovation practicum, the News Media Lab brings together student journalists, designers and developers across different schools at NTU. These student teams work on news media innovation projects for real industry clients over a 13-week semester, using the Google Design SPRINT. Students work alongside faculty and industry mentors from media and tech companies like Red Hat, Google, Facebook and Splice Media.
In the inaugural run of News Media Lab, Google sponsored a prize for the student team with the best prototype of a news media tool. The prize was an all-expenses paid trip for 8 to attend Newsgeist Europe in Athens in July 2019. Newsgeist is an unconference news event that brings together industry thought leaders and changemakers. For more info on News Media Lab: Website | GitHub | YouTube | Email |

Final Year ProjectsJessica also supervises final-year journalism students who work on 10,000-word capstone projects. These projects comprise in-depth reporting work that takes place over a year, culminating in long-form enterprise features. Over the past two years, her students have reported on wide-ranging issues including foster care in Singapore, child marriage in Malaysia and the lingering impact of Agent Orange in a Vietnamese province decades after the Vietnam War.

Business JournalismA key focus in her teaching portfolio, Jessica teaches business journalism at the undergraduate level. In this course, students acquire the foundational knowledge and the required skills expected of a journalist who aspire to work in a business newsroom. Upon graduation, several of her students have taken on journalist roles at business publications such as The Business Times, The Edge and Bloomberg.
Weaving in experiential learning, students in this class are expected to file a final assignment that will be considered for publication at The Business Times. Read some published assignments by clicking on the photos in the gallery. |
