About Jessica
Jessica Tan is an interdisciplinary writer with a strong journalism practice spanning almost two decades. As Contributing Editor at Forbes Asia, she covers the region's billionaire tycoons and their businesses. She also works on the valuations research and reporting work for the publication's wealth lists across Asia.
She is part of the 2020 international cohort of 50WomenCan, a leadership program for journalism, sponsored by the Ford Foundation & the Democracy Fund. Over her career, she has worked across newspaper, television, newswire and magazine formats. Her work has appeared in leading publications such as Dow Jones Newswires, Forbes Asia and The Straits Times. She’s equally comfortable interviewing billionaire CEOs, celebrities or the man on the street. Some memorable assignments to date: Spending a day with Warren Buffett in Omaha, Nebraska in 2001; covering the SARs outbreak in 2003; traveling to Zhuo Zhou, a small city in Northern China's Hebei province, in 2007 to dissect Nokia's strategy in penetrating rural markets in China; swimming with whale sharks in Western Australia in 2008; & spending time with explorer Mike Horn and his team as they sailed through the Great Barrier Reef on the Pangaea expedition in 2009. A former journalism faculty at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, she taught business journalism and news media innovation from 2015 to 2022. Jessica also writes short stories, one of which won an Honourable Mention at the national Golden Point Award in 2013. Her short story, Dragon Girl, was anthologized in Twenty-Two New Asian Short Stories (Edited by Mohammad A. Quayum, Silverfish Books) in 2016. She was also awarded an NAC Arts Creation Grant in 2013. She earned her post-graduate degree in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University in 2002, and holds a BA (History) degree from the National University of Singapore (1999).
